Five things to look for when choosing a contractor

Choosing a contractor to make home repairs can be an overwhelming process. Ease your mind and be confident that you’re choosing the best person for the job by asking the following questions:

  • Are they licensed, bonded and insured?
A reputable contractor should be able to provide their credentials to you on the spot or within a reasonable timeframe. Your home is an investment and you don’t want to be held responsible if something goes wrong on the job.
  • Are they in good standing with the Better Business Bureau?
Check to make sure that the contractor is registered with the Better Business Bureau and has adequately addressed any complaints that may have been filed.
  • Have they worked on similar projects?
Ensure that you’re hiring someone who is knowledgeable about the specific type of work you need completed and who has a proven track record of success. Contractors should be able to provide references upon request.
  • How does their estimate stack up?
As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to get itemized estimates from three separate contractors. This will allow you to compare the bids and choose the contractor that’s right for you based on budget, material costs and timeline.
  • What is the project timeline and payment schedule?
Your contract should clearly outline the time it will take to complete your project as well as the expected payment schedule. A reputable contractor won’t ask you to pay in full before the job is completed.
